Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernandez has left Ousmane Dembele out of the matchday squad as the Catalans prepare to face Alaves in La Liga.
It is not the first time that the coach is leaving out the French forward from his squad since the contractual controversy started. In the Copa del Rey elimination against Athletic Club at San Mames, Xavi left Dembele out of the squad to face the Basque side.
CitizensAlert reported on Thursday, January 20, 2022 that Barcelona had informed the French forward and his agent to find a new club, telling the player to leave FC Barcelona as soon as possible.
Dembele’s contract expires in June 2022 and several attempts to get him extend his contract have failed, with his agent demanding an outrageous salary for the player, sign-on fees as well unimaginable commission for himself. Barcelona officials have therefore refused to meet Dembele’s camp’s renewal conditions.
As disclosed by Barcelona’s Director of Football Mateu Alemany, the club believes that Dembele is not committed to its sporting project and is plotting to stay on till June 30 when his contract expires to enable him move to another club for free.
However, Barcelona, who invested over €105 million to recruit the Frenchman from Borussia Dortmund in 2017, would like to recoup part of that investment by selling him this January rather than waiting for the expiration of his contract in June.
On January 20, the same day Mateu Alemany addressed the press and urged Ousmane Dembele to find another club, the forward took to social media and accused the club of blackmailing him, saying that he’ll never give in to their blackmail.
Consequently, the relationship between the club and the player appears to have broken beyond repair.
As a consequence, in a tweet published on Barcelona’s official Twitter page, the matchday squad against Alaves was released and Ousmane Dembele’s name was again missing from the list for the second consecutive time.
