Italian football club Napoli has released a statement defending the mockery of its Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen. CitizensAlert reported that the club took to its official TikTok account to mock the striker after he missed a penalty against Bologna at the weekend.
Following that miss, which resulted in the club playing a 0-0 stalemate, the Italian club then took to its social media platform, particularly TikTok, where it published a video mocking the Nigerian, with a background voice which said: “Gimme penalty”.
Victor Osimhen agent Roberto Calenda later released a statement threatening to take legal action against the club. Although the club later deleted the video, the damage had already been done.
However, in a statement published by the club in reaction to the controversy, Napoli defended its action and refused to apologise to the player.
The statement reads:
“Calcio Napoli, wishing to avoid any exploitation of the issue, point out that we never wanted to offend or mock Victor Osimhen, who is a treasure of this club”.
“As proof of that, during the summer training retreat, the Club firmly rebuffed every offer that was received for the striker’s transfer abroad”.
“Social media, in particular TikTok, has always used an expressive form of language with a light heart and creativity, without wanting to, as in the case with Osimhen as protagonist, have any intention of insult or derision”.
“In any case, if Victor perceived any offence towards him, this was not what the club intended”.
