The Nigerian Police claims it has found the man who killed Vanguard journalist Tordue Salem in Abuja.
Itoro Clement, whom the police claims killed Mr Tordue, is a driver who is said to have hit the journalist at night.
Frank Mba, the Police’s Public Relations Officer paraded the supposed killer at the premises of Intelligence Response Team [IRT] in Abuja and claimed that he was arrested as a result of an investigation by the Force Intelligence Bureau.
The police spokesman claimed the accused was driving a Toyota Camry  with licence number: BWR 243 BK when he hit journalist Tordue around Mabushi area of Abuja at about 10:00 PM and zoomed off afterwards.
Whilst being interrogated, the suspect said that he thought Mr Tordue was an armed robber.
“After the incident, I thought he was an armed robber until I saw a smashed phone on my windscreen the following morning. The phone had stopped working so I threw it away.”
When asked why he had to zoom off after knocking down the journalist, Clement said the area where the accident occurred is notorious for criminal activities.
“The place where the incident happened is a known criminal den, everyone knows it,” he said.
The police claimed that the body of the journalist was found at Wuse General Hospital mortuary and that mortuary attendants did not make any attempt to identify the corpse in order to contact family members.
