The Lagos State Judicial Panel on police brutality has recommended that the Lekki Tollgate be renamed: “#EndSARS Tollgate.”
This is contained in the #EndSARS report submitted to the Lagos State Government on Monday, November 15, 2021.
The panel, which was chaired by retired judge Doris Okuwobi submitted the report to the Office of the Governor in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.
The panel also recommended that October 20 of every year be named “#EndSARS National Day” in commemoration of those killed at the toll plaza. The report further added that the toll gate should be a “Toll-Free Day” every October 20.
In the report, the Panel said that there should be a monument to memorialise young people who were killed at the Lekki Tollgate with names of the victims clearly inscribed on the monument.
The report urged that the Federal Government of dictator Buhari to apologises to the youth for violently disrupting the protest through its armed state actors.
The Panel further recommended that the Buhari dictatorship sets up a special Trust Fund solely for the compensation of the victims of the #EndSARS protest and to ensure that justice is served and is indeed seen to be served over the cruelty suffered by the youth during the peaceful protest. The Panel said that doing this will accelerate healing and will equally win and build trust amongst members of the public.
The recommendation reads in part:
“The Panel hereby recommends that the Lekki Toll Plaza be made a memorial site for ENDSARS Protest: By renaming to “ENDSARS TOLLGATE”.
“The panel recommends that October 20th of every year, the day is made a “Toll-Free Day” at the Lekki Toll Gate as long as the tollgate exists; that October 20 of every year be made EndSARS day nationally for the remembrance of our falling youth.
“That for the purpose of restitution, healing and reconciliation the federal Government needs to publicly apologise to the youth for abruptly undermining the protest with their state actors.
“The Government should do all it can to bridge the gap of distrust with the Youth. A monument memorialising the lives lost and those injured at the Lekki Tollgate with the names inscribed on the Monument.”
