CitizensAlert reported early on Monday, October 4, that interns of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital [UCTH] stormed the streets of Calabar to demand their 11 months unpaid salaries.
Prior to the peaceful protest, both police and the lawless Department of State Services [DSS] in Calabar had invited leaders of the aggrieved interns with the aim of intimidating and discouraging them from proceeding with the planned peaceful protest. But despite this ploy, the interns stormed the street of Calabar as planned to press home their demands.
According to CrossRiverWatch, the interns have been suspended since August 2, 2021 when they asked the management of the hospital to pay their outstanding salaries. In response, however, the management of the hospital claimed that the demand was “embarrassing” and subsequently sacked them, albeit arbitrarily.
The accumulated salaries of the interns are said to be over N480 million.
