A senior pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God [RCCG] has been stabbed to death in Umukoto area of Nekede, Imo State, whilst attempting to separate a fight between a couple, the Imo State Police Command said in a statement.
Spokesman to the Imo State Police Command SP Mike Abattam, who confirmed the tragic incident on Monday, July 19, said that the RCCG pastor Thompson Onyekwuru (62) arrived at the scene of the fight and tried to prevent Obumneke Onyemechileuzo from stabbing his wife Ogechi.
The Police Public Relations Officer said that Obumneke, armed with a kitchen knife, quickly stabbed the RCCG pastor on his back and he collapsed to the ground, unconscious.
According to the police spokesman SP Mike Abattam, he said that upon the arrival of the police at the scene of the incident following a distress call, the suspect attempted to stab one of the police officers who in turn opened fire on the suspect “in self-defence.”
Abattam said that the pastor and the suspect Mr Obumneke were subsequently rushed to the Rosana Hospital where they were confirmed dead. He said that their corpses were deposited at the Agbala Mortuary.
The police spokesman, meanwhile, said that Obumneke’s wife was responding to treatment after she had been admitted into the intensive care unit of Rosana Hospital.
The spokesman said that the kitchen knife, which serves as exhibit, was taken away by the police, and that the commissioner of police in the state had ordered for an investigation into the incident.
