Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Rafa Mir came off the bench to record a spectacular hat-trick as Spain came from behind to defeat Ivory Coast 5-2 to qualify for the semi-final of the men’s football competition in the ongoing 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Ivory Coast’s Eric Bailly opened the scoring after 10 minutes of play but Dani Olmo’s effort ensured that the two sides went into half-time levelled.
The match was headed towards extra-time when Max Gradel pulled the Ivorians ahead in the 91st minute, but the Spaniards had more tricks in their books.
Substitute Rafa Mir, introduced in stoppage time, took advantage of Ivory Coast’s defensive indiscipline and subsequently dragged the match into extra-time.
Real Sociedad forward Mikel Oyarzabal converted from the spot in the 98th minute to put Spain ahead for the first time in the tie.
With Ivory Coast clearly weary and now chasing the game, Mir scored two goals in the last three minutes to shatter Ivory Coast’s dream as Spain reached the semi-final of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
