Health authorities in Spain have approved the return of fans to stadiums for football and basketball matches from 2021/22 season.
This was disclosed on Thursday, June 24, 2021 by the country’s health minister Carolina Arias. She said that the autonomous regions in the country are at liberty to decide what capacity each stadium should have.
“We will return to normality with regards to attendances in our stadiums for the start of La Liga and the basketball league,” the minister said.
“I am convinced the news will be well received and accepted in sport in our country.”
Like many countries across the world, the advent of COVID-19 compelled Spanish authorities to put in place various restrictions in a spirited effort to curb the spread of the virus. The restriction placed on crowded places led to matches being played in empty stadiums throughout last season, leaving an extremely negative effect on the finances of football clubs.
